Who is Glow Girl?

Glow Girl is an idea. She represents all of us, before we have a chance to discover who we are or where we fit into the world. We fumble around, we fall, we mess up, we make mistakes. Glow Girl makes all the mistakes and, in the beginning, has quite a fun time making them. But she soon realizes that she cannot live in the fantasy of her poor choices. That there are consequences for her actions and being young and naive does not spare her from them.

We’ve all made mistakes, we have to. It’s how we grow. Without failure we do not progress. College, while being a stressful and challenging academic environment, can also serve as a place for kids to make the mistakes they need to, to grow into the adults they become. In this sense, the college campus setting becomes the ultimate catalyst to the Coming Of Age theme that engulfs this novel.

While Glow Girl is a fictional story, the circumstances she finds herself in, and some of the choices she makes, are familiar to many. At an age where the main objective is to be liked, loved, and accepted, many of us would make the same choices, if we thought it would bring us closer to those base desires.

These choices, while seemingly naive and innocent at first, bring her to a place of desperate addiction that she cannot escape from. Here is her test. This is where she must make a different choice, a choice to either continue on down the path of recklessness, or to change her life and fight to crawl out of the darkness she had suddenly found herself in. This is where she grows into the woman she was meant to be - will she grow into a desperate addict and live the life of a derelict, or will she change her ways and become a positive and productive person in the world.
